were dug at Olkaria, in Nakuru County.
The Olkaria I Power station was com-
pleted in 1981 and was Africa’s first
geothermal power plant.
In 2014, Kenya launched the world’s
largest single turbine geothermal
power plant. The commissioning of the
final phase of a combined 280-mega-
watt (MW) electricity generating plant
by President Uhuru Kenyatta raised
geothermal energy’s contribution to
Kenya’s overall energy mix from 13
percent in 2010 to 51 percent cur-
rently.
Also in 2012, the government in part-
nership with the World Bank Group
commissioned the construction of
the Lake Turkana Wind Power project
(LTWP), which will be the largest wind
farm in sub-Saharan Africa. The proj-
ect is estimated to cost a whopping
582 million Euros and provide 300MW
of low cost power to the national grid.
In June 2015, a survey done by con-
sulting firms KPMG and the East Africa
Venture Capital Association, named
Kenya as the leading destination
of foreign direct investments in East
Africa.
With a brand new Constitution con-
taining a robust bill of rights, with
more emphasis on decentralization
of power and resources; which also
establishes strong institutions, Kenya’s
prospects looks quite bright.
