movie, “12 Years a Slave.” And the
memory of the late Wangari Maathai
shall forever remain etched in the
hearts of many Kenyans-and indeed
global citizens-for her fervent fight
against environmental degradation-a
feat that earned her a Nobel Peace
Prize.

Kenya’s exploits on the tracks has
attracted global attention and rec-
ognition. The country is famous for
its world-champion marathon and
long-distance runners, but the details
of their domination are fascinating.
Kenyans hold the Boston marathon
record for men and women-they have
won virtually every single marathon at
least once and have claimed two of
the top three places in steeplechase
in the IAAF World Championships
(held every two years) since 1991, with
the exception of 2003 where only one
Kenyan made the podium.
