SITES OF SENEGAL
GOREE ...THE ISLAND OF MEMORY
Goree, a symbol of the slave trade, apart from its
strategic position, has played key roles throughout
global history. Today, classified as a world heritage
site by UNESCO, the island with its unique architec-
tural style is a place regularly visited by thousands
of people from all over the world. It offers a wealth
of reference sites from the past, providing visitors
with useful information for understanding the history
of Africa and Senegal.
The slave house is a compelling place to visit by
tourists, and many distinguished persons like Rene
Caille (French explorer), Felix Houphouet Boigny (he
obtained his teaching diploma at Teachers training
school, William Ponty, which was on the island at
the time), Nelson Mandela, Bill Clinton, Pope John
Paul II, Barack Obama, have all connected with
their past on the Island.
HIDDEN DJOUDJI PARK TREASURES
The Djoudj National Park is a rich
habitat for a million Swallows,
25 thousand black-crowned
Night Heron, and thousands of
other birds. Tourists who visit the
Djoudj Park are bound to enjoy
its invaluable treasures always.
The park, which is classified as a
world heritage site by UNESCO, is
filled with great wild life such as
warthogs, jackals, and the great
bustard, among others. Even
frequent visitors to Djoudj are never
accustomed to the place as the
park is always full of surprises.
SINE-SALOUM DELTA
...DISCOVERING A SANCTUARY SITE
The Sine-Saloum Delta (Fatick) is deemed to be
one of the most beautiful regions of Senegal.
With 32 islands, it offers exceptional scen-
ery consisting of many rivers and mangrove
swamps. An impressive sea breeze, that soothes
the heat, greets visitors as they arrive the Sa-
loum islands. The Islands are made more beauti-
ful with the magic of solar beams that span the
moving bed of the sea to the mountains of salt
like white milk all over the Sine-Saloum Delta.
