UBA Presents $50,000 to Former South African
President, Thabo Mbeki; Winner of Daily Trust African
of The Year
UBA’s Efforts in Rekindling Reading Culture is
Commendable, says Nigerian IGP Abubakar

istinguished African statesman and former president of
South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, on Monday, May 20, 2013
received the Daily Trust African of the Year award in Abuja
Nigeria.
T
he Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IGP) MD Abubarkar and other
senior officers in the police hierarchy, on Thursday, June 20, 2013 in
Abuja, commended UBA for its commitment to giving back to the soci-
ety and making meaningful contributions to the community.

The award is endowed by UBA with
the sum of $50,000.
Speaking at the ceremony the
GMD who was represented by
our Executive Director Mr. Dan
Okeke said the choice of Mbeki
could not have been better.
According to him “he has remained
committed to Africa especially
in his role in bringing peace to
Sudan. Development cannot take
place in a situation of strife. Africa's
development is tied to the creation
of enabling environment where
peace is an integral part”.
He commended Media Trust
Limited; Publishers of Daily Trust
Newspapers, for instituting the
awards ceremony and sustaining it
for the past 5 years.

The occasion was the pres-
entation of literature books
by UBA Foundation to sec-
ondary students drawn from
police staff¬ schools across
the country. The book dona-
tion was in continuation of
the ‘Read Africa Initiative’
of UBA Foundation geared
towards encouraging sec-
ondary school students, to
read.
The Inspector General of Po-
lice noted that poor reading
culture has serious implica-
tions and urged the students
to take the UBA Foundation
initiative seriously. "Not only
should children read to pass
an exam and widen their
knowledge scope, read-
ing refreshes the brain and
invigorates the minds of
people. It is the bedrock of
effective thinking" he said.
