Georges Wega
MD/CEO, UBA Cameroon
H
e likes great, inspiring
people; straight forward
people and good African
food. This gentle man is an Afri-
can with a deep love for Africa.
He has a dream to see more Af-
ricans and African ventures rise
to the top of the global scene.
He is Georges Wega, MD/CEO
UBA Cameroon.
Born in Buéa, Georges grew
up in Yaoundé, Cameroon. He
is married with 4 kids, and an
Engineer by training with over
17 years of diverse experience
in different businesses, sectors,
countries and continents.
He started his career with UBA
Group in January 2008, as
Director Corporate Transforma-
tion and Advisor to the Group
Managing Director/CEO and
was later appointed MD/CEO
of UBA Properties Ltd. In Sep-
tember 2010, he was appointed
DMD for UBA Cameroon before
assuming the mantle of lead-
ership, 6 months later, as MD/
CEO, UBA Cameroon.
Notwithstanding the tough
socio-economic challenges
faced by businesses in emerg-
ing markets, UBA Cameroon
has done very well, emerging
‘Bank of the Year’ for 2 con-
secutive years. Georges Wega
takes us on an adventure into
the young but vibrant UBA
Cameroon which is celebrat-
ing its 5th anniversary. He also
gives insight into Cameroon‘s
economic outlook.
UBA Cameroon recently marked
its 5th anniversary. What have
been the bank’s major achieve-
ments within this period?
The 5th year mark provided us
indeed the opportunity to look
back and appreciate the jour-
ney so far both in terms of what
we did well but also and more
importantly, what we could do
better. UBA Cameroon started
on a very strong and aggres-
sive note and we have never
relented. The bank which ranks
between 5th (PBT), 7th (Deposits)
and 8th (Risk Assets) positions out
of 13 banks in the country has
been the fastest growing bank in
the industry.
• We are now serving over
40,000 customers through our
network of 14 branches, soon
to be 15 (with the planned
opening of the Limbe
branch), covering 5 out of 10
regions. In addition, we have
15 ATMs and are currently
deploying Point of Sales
Terminals across the country.
• We have provided significant
support to different types of
customers, ranging from:
