merely a ‘housewife’ to a mobster. She is however
a deeply complex and well written character in
what might be the best show of all time which is
why I can’t do a list like this without mentioning her.
She constantly grapples with the knowledge that
her family is benefitting from a life of crime (which
she also secretly enjoys) and throws herself into
doing good to compensate. She constantly fights
for her marriage and her family even when that
requires fighting her husband and constantly trying
to improve their situation. Her conflicted mental
state makes her a truly interesting and engaging
character to watch and is why she is one of my
strongest women on television.
Queen Elizabeth
(The Crown)
This is a weird one because she’s a real person.
However, watching the crown gives us incredible
insight into the lives of the British royal family
and has given me a better understanding of this
incredible woman. It shows us a woman constantly
battling with the fact that her duty and responsibility
to her country always have to come before her
personal needs and has caused her to sacrifice a
lot, even at the expense of her family. It shows us
the journey of how an unsure young woman thrust
into power because of her father’s untimely death
had to fight to maintain power while surrounded by
strongly opinionated men to become the longest
reigning British monarch, the longest serving female
head of state and also the oldest living monarch
in the world. So, she is not only a strong female
character, she’s a strong female, PERIOD!
Honourable mentions: Angela Abar (Watchmen),
Michonne (The Walking Dead), Meredith Grey
(Grey’s anatomy), Sydney Bristow (Alias)
