FASHION
FLOWER
POWER
BY FUNLOLA OBE & MORENIKE OMOTOSO
Funlola Obe and Morenike
Omotoso examine designer
trends this summer to keep
you up to date. And even
though florals are forbidden
in the new dress code, these
tips will help you plan and
look good even outside work.
I
f there is one predictable trend that
comes around every spring/summer,
it is probably florals. Remember the
scene from one of the best movies
of all time? (well for fashion lovers),
The Devil wears Prada, where the
editors were pitching trends for spring
and Miranda Priestly remarked cattily
‘Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking!’
However while floral pieces might not
be groundbreaking fashion, they are a
staple for spring and summer. Nothing
says sunshine more than flowers right.
For years, designers have constantly
paraded floral designs down the run-
ways for the Spring/Summer shows.
In 2017 designers like Tory Burch,
Balenciaga, Chloe, Gucci, Alexander
McQueen and Alexander Wang
all had florals as a staple in their
spring/summer collections while high
street stores like Topshop, H&M and
Zara are sure to have floral pieces
in store. African designers like DZYN
(Abuja, Nigeria), Gloria Wavamunno
(Kampala, Uganda), Nkwo (Lagos,
Nigeria) also feature floral designs in
their collections this year.
Dolce and Gabbana are known for
having florals as a staple in all their
designs; clothes, shoes, bags, sunglass-
es, accessories (I love their floral head-
bands) and obviously perfumes.
