New Year, New and
Improved Culture
By Alero Ladipo
W
e constantly hear the
terms core values, mission
statements and culture and
have integrated them in the business
language without first allowing the
true meaning of these terms to sink in.
Some individuals see core values as
just another rhetoric from leadership,
some see them as posters on the wall
but with the launch of UBA’s new
values it is important for everyone; yes,
staff and customers, to understand
what the core values are, Why they
should be important to us as individuals
and the bank as a whole.
Core values are the deeply
ingrained principles that guide all of
a company’s actions; they serve as
its cultural cornerstones. Collins and
Porras succinctly define core values as
being inherent and sacrosanct; they
can never be compromised, either for
convenience or short-term economic
gain.
Our core values are everything we do
and say. They are who we are and
what we stand for.
The importance of core values go
beyondwhatwedoatwork. Employees
would need these core values to
resonate with them personally, or they
might find themselves as misfits in the
organisation.
Core values are the source of a
company’s distinctiveness and must
be maintained at all costs. They are
an organization’s identity, passion,
principles, beliefs and philosophy.
Values are what customers experience
and a great experience attracts
potential customers.
This year our values have been
ENHANCED, not CHANGED, and built
on after 11 years of following the
HEIR principle. We are afforded the
opportunity to find ourselves and to
redefine our outlook to focus more on
the Customer.
These values allow us to distinguish
ourselves, build on our expertise and
show the world what UBA stands for,
with members of staff showcasing
Enterprise, Excellence and Execution
as their watch words, and each value
holding definitions that are clear and
strong.

Have The End in Mind
The good thing about corporate
values is that it should have corporate
and personal impact. A popular quote
by John Spence (International Business
Speaker & Author); “My definition of
success: When your core values and
self-concept are in harmony with your
daily actions and behaviours.” We
should strive to uphold these values
personally and professionally.
Our core values
are everything
we do and say.
They are who we
are and what we
stand for.”
