You can lower the
risk of getting breast
cancer
We cannot prevent breast cancer yet, but there are ways
to lower your personal risk.
If you are overweight or obese, you could try to lose weight
in a healthful way; if you are already in a healthy weight
range, try to stay there. Regular exercise, as little as 75 to
150 minutes of walking a week has been shown to have
a lowering effect on risk. Limit the amount of alcohol you
drink, research found that women who have two or more
alcoholic drinks each day have an elevated risk of breast
cancer.
Remember, early detection is the best prevention.
Perform a monthly breast examination and look for any changes or any-
thing that is unusual for you. Consult your doctor as required.
The youngest known survivor of breast cancer is Aleisha
Hunter from Ontario, Canada. At only three years old, she
underwent a complete mastectomy in 2010 to treat her
juvenile strain of breast cancer.
Breast cancer can develop at any age, but risk does
increase with age.
