about
Africa
In the Q4-2013 edition of LKM, we
ran a compilation of 5 must-watch
movies on Africa’s numerous strug-
gles and victories. Our list, which is in
no way exhaustive, included Hotel
Rwanda (Rwanda), Blood Diamonds
(Sierra Leone), Last King of Scotland
(Uganda), Half of a Yellow Sun
(Nigeria) and Mandela: Long Walk
to Freedom (South Africa).
Here is another list of must-watch
movies, set and based on great
African stories.
Lumumba (Congo)
This movie is based on the true story of
the rise to power, fall and execution of
Patrice Émery Lumumba, the independ-
ence leader and first democratically
elected Prime Minister of the Repub-
lic of the Congo (DRC). Lumumba,
in an attempt to prevent the Congo
succumbing to secession, and anarchy,
is ousted from office and killed due to
commercial and political interests.
Sometimes in April
(Rwanda)
This historical story on the Rwandan
1994 genocide centres on two brothers
who witness the widespread killings,
lose some members of their family
and become divided by politics. The
film depicts the intertwining stories
of people struggling to survive the
genocide, and the aftermath, as they
try to find justice and reconciliation.
Invictus (South
Africa)
Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela
in this inspiring true story of how newly
elected Mandela joins forces with the
captain of South Africa's rugby team to
help unite their racially and econom-
ically divided country through the
universal language of sport. Mandela
rallies South Africa's rugby team to
make their historic run to the 1995
Rugby World Cup Championship.
Sarafina (South
Africa)
This eye-watering movie is about South
Africa’s struggle for freedom through
the eyes of a revolutionary minded
teacher and students who get caught
up in the middle of a fatal battle for
freedom, some of them paying the
ultimate price with their lives.
From a Whisper
(Kenya)
This movie, released on the 10th
anniversary of the August 7, 1998 terror-
ist bombing in Kenya, is a realistic story
of the bombing aftermath. The story is
about a young, rebellious artist and an
intelligence officer who both lost their
loved ones in the US Embassy bombing.
They are forced to learn to confront
their fears and to forgive.
