20sThe African 00s
The 00s was the decade of comfort. People tended to care less about putting such a big
00’
effort into their appearances, in fact it was almost un-fashionable to do so. This era saw the revival of Ankara in Africa as previously, Western fashion was the norm but then people started to take pride in African fashion once again. Tracksuits were also very popular in this decade (juicy couture especially) and skinny jeans started to take over the hipster and bootcut jeans. Converses, ballet flats and loafers replaced high heels for a lot of women. African style jewel- lery like chunky bangles and earrings were also in. Designer fashion became more accessible to people around the world with more people spending on high end accessories like hand- bags and shoes.
2010s... Nowadays, we tend to recycle fashion and we can see the influence of past de- cades on most of what we wear today. We see the A line skirts from the 50s, the Oleku style from the 60s, the flared pants from the 70s, the power suits of the 80s, the hip hop style from the 90s (the ‘alte’ kids especially love this trend) and the Ankara styles from the 00s. Most decades have a defining style and theme (if one could call it that), and this leads me to wonder...what will be the defining style of the ‘2010s’? Maybe we can call this the decade of ‘The Recycle’.
