FASHION
50’s
The Fabulous 50s
Fashion in the 50s took a major turn after the end of the second world war. Women tended to show off their figures more by wearing tighter fitting clothes, A-line skirts
to emphasise their tiny waists paired with fitted shirts and shorter lengths. The men developed a more relaxed style by starting to wear jeans more often, shorts with the buttons open, short sleeved shirts and bowties. Another thing that changed were the hairstyles, the most noticeable trend for African men was to put a side part in their hair while the women favoured European styles and straightened their hair to fit the trend. Women also liked to mix in some African accessories with their westernised clothes by paring traditional head ties with their dresses and wearing raffia acces- sories. Most women today are still wearing the full A line skirts, while the men still rock the laid-back style.
