The Luangwa River is the most intact major river system in Africa and is the life-blood of this 9059 km2 Park. The Park hosts a wide variety of wildlife, birds and vegetation. The now famous ‘walking sa- fari’ originated in this Park and is still one of the finest ways to experience Africa’s pristine wilderness first-hand. There are
60 different animal species and over 400 different bird species in South Luangwa National Park.
Kabwata Cultural Village
Kabwata cultural village is a popu-
lar Lusaka attraction and home to 72 woodcarvers and artists who showcase their products. Visitors can find traditional Zambian artefacts to take home as sou- venirs and gifts including beads, drums, spears, walking sticks, African printed
fabrics, tie-dye and batiks. The cultural village has a restaurant called Tigwilizane which is an uncommercialised tradition- al restaurant with all the main Zambian delicacies.
Livingstone Museum
The excellent Livingstone Museum is the oldest, largest and best museum in the country. Dr David Livingstone was de- scribed as the “greatest man of his gen- eration” by Florence Nightingale. He was a fearless explorer who travelled in many parts of Africa and was the first Europe- an to come across the famous Victoria Falls, which he named after his queen. It is divided into sections covering archae- ology, history, ethnography and natural history. Highlights include its collection of original David Livingstone memorabilia
(including signed letters), tribal artefacts (from bark cloth to witchcraft exhibits), a life-sized model of an African village, taxidermy displays and coverage of modern-day Zambian history
Dag Hammarskjoeld Memorial site
Dag Hammarskjoeld Memorial site was declared a historic landmark after Dag Hammarskjöld, a former United Nations Secretary General passed on September 18 1961 in a plane crash. The plane car- rying him and 18 others crashed into an area west of Ndola killing everyone on board. The crash site was declared a his- toric landmark and national monument by the Zambian government. Dag was on a mission attempting to bring peace to the Congo Republic.
