COUNTRY FOCUS
Congo. Its rapid economic growth can be attested by its stable currency which has been ranked as the sixth strongest currency in Africa by the Business Insider report published on 1st March 2019.
Zambia also has one of the world’s fastest growing populations with over 4.8 million young people aged 15-35, about 36.7% of Zambia’s population.
During the 1990’s the Government embarked on the privatisation exercise which led to a growing trend of non-tra- ditional exports including agro-process- ing, primary products and textiles. This trend has transformed the Zambian economy and seen strong growth in recent years with GDP growth of more than 5%.
The major industries of Zambia include Copper mining and processing, con- struction, emerald mining, beverages, food, textiles, fertilizer and horticulture. The agricultural sector in Zambia has been robust in the past few years by pro- ducing bumper harvests since 2009, with maize and staples leading the produce.
Some of Zambia’s more popular tourist attractions include the Victoria falls, South Luangwa National park, Kabwata cultural village, Livingstone Museum and the Dag Hammarskjoeld memorial site among many others.
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, the border between
Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. In more modern terms Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.
One special vantage point is across the Knife-edge Bridge, where visitors can have the finest view of the Eastern Cat- aract and the Main Falls as well as the Boiling Pot.
South Luangwa National Park
Experts have dubbed South Luangwa to be one of the greatest wildlife sanctuar- ies in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of animals around the Luangwa River, and its oxbow lagoons, is among the most intense in Africa.
