Located in Central Africa, Gabon shares borders with Equatorial Guinea, Cam- eroon and Congo. A middle-income society, with a population of 1.8 million
people, 85% of its territory is covered by the forest. The main cities of Gabon are Libreville, Port - Gentil and Franceville. The Gabonese subsoil is rich in minerals and oil and it is
Until 2014, oil accounted for 40% of GDP and more than 85% of export earnings. Manganese is the main mining resource as well as gold. Other successful indus- tries include the wood sector which is the largest industrial employer.
Gabon is a forest country where fauna and flora are still well preserved and pro-
tected. It has numerous national parks including the Lopé Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1962; the falls of Poubara (Haut-Ogooué), Kongou (Ivindo Park) and Djoumou, Batéké uplands in South-East Gabon. Also, being a coast- al country, Gabon has a fair share of beaches. Some of the more popular ones include Pointe Denis, Cap Esterias, Cap Lopez and Mayumba.
Gabonese craftsmanship is also a great area of interest its large number of tra- ditional masks, stone sculptures, pottery, Raffia, etc.
