Makerere University Kampala,
Uganda’s largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning,
first established as a technical school in 1922. Makerere was alma mater to many post-
independence African leaders, including Ugandan president Milton Obote, Tanzanian presidents
Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa, president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph
Kabila, and Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki.
Buganda Kingdom. The site serves as
an important cultural and religious
landmark for the Baganda people.
Another major landmark to visit in
Uganda is the Martyrs Shrine located
in Namugongo. This Minor Basilica/
Shrine is a Catholic church dedicated
to the Martyrs of Uganda, a group
of 45 young Christian converts killed
on orders of Mwanga ll, the Kabaka
(King) of Buganda between 31st
January 1885 and 27th January 1887.
