GMD’s Message
T
he on-going World Cup is proving
to be a globally unifying event as
people from different nationalities
and cultures travel to Brazil or join in
from their television sets to celebrate
this quadrennial festival of football.
In the spirit of the season and as we
approach the mid-point of our Project
Alpha transformation journey, I believe
the World Cup in Brazil provides a multi-
tude of lessons which we can all learn
from.
Firstly, team work is critical for any
successful team. Every team member
must understand the role he or she
has been given and play it to the best
of their ability in order for the team to
succeed. The defenders must prevent
the conceding of goals to ensure the
team does not lose while the strikers
must strive to score at every opportunity
to enable the team win. They are all in
it together.
This also applies in the corporate world.
We all need to play our roles excellently
to enable the Bank win consistently in
the marketplace irrespective of the
nature of our individual responsibilities,
be it a front office or back office role.
Similar to the football team, we are all
in it together.
Secondly, football, unlike boxing, is
not won on points. It does not matter
how much possession a team has,
how many shots on target, passes
completed, free kicks or corner kicks
taken. What matters is how many goals
were scored.
In all our different tasks, we need to
ensure our efforts SCORE GOALS. This
means winning market share from our
competitors, improving on our opera-
tional efficiency and delivering high
levels of customer service. The World
Cup will only be won by the team who
scores more goals than their opponents
in their respective games.
A football game is made up of two
halves. We are currently at the HALF
TIME mark in our Project Alpha journey.
This is the time for everyone to rally
round and support each other in order
for the Bank to succeed. This is the
time for us to make concrete gains
against the competition and win in the
marketplace.
I have no doubt that if we imbibe the
lessons from the World Cup, we will win
our trophy of industry leadership at the
end of 2015.
