Detail 1:
Suit
– Go for double vented
suits, these are more modern and
prestigious. Consider double-button,
notched-lapel jackets for more formal
outings. Always leave the bottom but-
ton of your jacket undone and remem-
ber to unbutton your jacket before
sitting down. Keep your jacket lint-free.
Above all, ensure your jacket fits and
compliments your figure.
Detail 2:
Shirt
– Never wear a wrinkled
or over-starched shirt! Your shirt collar
should be crisp and crease-free. Use
collar stays to keep your shirt collars
straight and flat against your collar-
bone. When you wear a jacket over
your shirt, your shirt cuffs and collar
should be exposed about half an
inch from the jacket sleeve and collar
respectively.
Detail 5:
Socks
– When
wearing a suit, avoid
short socks that reveal
your skin when you sit
or cross your legs. Your
socks colour should also
match your trouser col-
our. Never wear socks
on sandals!
Detail 6:
Belt
– Keep it
professional; the col-
our and finish of your
belt should match the
colour and finish of
your dress shoes. For
instance, black leather
belt should be worn with
black leather shoes.
Avoid loud belt buckles
and stick to classic thin
leather when wearing
dress trousers.
Detail 7:
Shoes
– Your shoes should always be clean, well pol-
ished and free of scratches. Wear the right shoe for the right
outfit. For instance, for formal occasions, lace-up leather dress
shoes such as Oxfords and Bluchers are best worn with suits.
Detail 8:
Tie
– Choose a kind of tie knot that harmonises with
your shirt’s collar. Your tie should be firmly knotted and should
have a necktie dimple. Be mindful of your tie’s length; your tie
should always end at the centre of your belt buckle or a few
centimetres above your belt. Do not wear a tie on a short-
sleeve shirt.
Detail 9:
Accessories
– Do not over accessorise. Try limiting
your jewellery to wristwatches for your different outfits and your
wedding band if you’re married. Throw in a pocket square
to add class to your suit. Never clip mobile phones and other
devices to your waist and remember that a Bluetooth headset
is not a fashion accessory.
Detail 10:
Cologne
– Apply colognes mildly. Very strong smell-
ing cologne can be nauseating and a complete turn-off.
Detail 3:
Grooming
– Your hair, your
nails and, yes, your breath are very im-
portant components of your appear-
ance. Facial hairs must be properly
groomed and nails well manicured.
If you must grow a beard, keep it trim
and neat. Keep your breath fresh with
breath fresheners and mints. Avoid
chewing gums, especially when talk-
ing to people.
Detail 4:
Trousers
– Your pants should
neither be too long nor too short, dress
trousers should cut off just at the top of
your heels. Avoid wearing your pants
too waist-high or low. Keep your fabric
lint-free. Do not wear your dress pants
without a belt especially if your shirt is
tucked in.
