How Secure Are
Your UBA Cards
for
Online Payment?
By Abolaji Akilo
T
o become a responsible
Cardholder, you should
be aware of not only the
benefits of using a Payment
Card, but also how to protect
your card details and funds
when using your card via the
online payment option.
At UBA we offer three different
Card variants, each with its
own unique secure online
payment option to protect our
Cardholders and to strengthen
their confidence when making
online transactions with our
cards.
For all transactions done on
Nigerian websites our UBA Verve
and MasterCard cardholders are
protected by One-Time Password
(OTP) whereby a secure code
(OTP) is sent to cardholder’s
bank registered mobile phone or
email. This code (OTP) which can
only be used once will always
be required to complete any of
such transactions. However, in
order to remove the nuisance
factor that this could cause, this
feature is only automatically
turned on for transactions that
are likely to be fraudulent. To
use a Visa Debit and Prepaid
Card on a local website, you will
need an iPIN which can only be
activated at UBA terminals.
Whenever you make a purchase
on a foreign website, you
are protected by ‘Verified by
Visa’ (VbyV) if you have any
of our Visa Credit, Debit or
Prepaid cards and MasterCard
SecureCode (MCSC) if you
opted for the MasterCard
products. This provides an
added layer of security when
a UBA Visa or MasterCard
cardholder attempts online
transactions. It is an online
program designed to make
internet purchase transactions
safer by authenticating a
cardholder’s identity during
online transactions and helping
stop fraudulent purchases before
they occur.

corner of your browser window for a padlock

personal information as it is being transmitted to
the merchant. As well, the secure website ad-
dress will begins with “https://”.

you, they will email you and ask you for your ac-

asking for account information. If you have been
emailed for this information then you have likely
been “phished” (pronounced as fished *imagine
the email as a bait). Phishing refers to an online
scam that seeks out personal financial informa-
