Ibo is one of the Quirimbas Islands in the
Indian Ocean off northern Mozambique.
In the late eighteenth century, Portuguese
colonialists built the Fort of São João, which
still survives, and the town, as a slave port,
became the second most important in the
region after Mozambique Island.

Mozambique is very rich and diverse in
culture. The country has two seasons
comprising Summer (September to
April) - busiest time for tourism, lots of
events and festive celebrations; and

Politics
The ruling party: Frente de Libertação
de Moçambique (FRELIMO) has
been in government since the inde-
pendence and won all the succes-
sive elections since 1994. The main
opposition parties are Resistência
Nacional de Moçambique (RENAMO)
and Movimento Democrática de
Moçambique (MDM).
A UN-negotiated peace agreement
between FRELIMO and the rebel
RENAMO forces ended the fighting in
