he name “Ghana” which means
“Warrior King” is derived from the
ancient Akan Kingdom of Ghana.
Ghana was inhabited in pre-colonial
times by a number of kingdoms includ-
ing the gold-rich Akan kingdom which
was one of the most prominent king-
doms in the ancient Ghana Empire.
The Republic of Ghana is an eco-

nomic powerhouse in West Africa, and
has one of the biggest economies on
the African continent and one of the
world’s fastest growing economies. It
is a fossil fuel-rich, natural and mineral
resource nation. It is home to one of
the world’s largest gold and sweet
crude oil reserves and also the second
major producer of cocoa in the world.
