Stay the Course
I
welcome all of us to penultimate year in our quest
for industry leadership. It is important that as we
settle into the New Year, we do a self appraisal of
our strengths and weaknesses in the out-gone year
to clearly focus on the opportunities opening up in
a fast growing African economy.
It is also timely to stress the importance of "Pushing
Boundaries" and the need for us
to set challenging goals for
ourselves as a path to per-
sonal development and to
spur us to higher levels of
individual
performance
in 2014. It is important we
‘STAY THE COURSE" in our
quest for industry domi-
nance by 2015.
In the course of our journey
last year, we all encoun-
tered unforeseen chal-
lenges which tested
our resolve in

continuing the pursuit of the different goals we
set at the start of the year. This did not come as a
surprise as the road to the achievement of auda-
cious goals is always filled with obstacles. It makes
the journey more difficult but not impossible.
In the words of Booker T. Washington, a well re-
spected African-American leader of the 19th and
early 20th centuries, "Success is not measured
by the position one has reached in life, rather by
the obstacles one overcomes while trying to suc-
ceed".
Our realisation of the benefits, which the attain-
ment of audacious goals provide is built upon
our ability to "STAY THE COURSE" and persevere
when faced with challenges. We should always
keep our eyes not on present circumstances but
on the benefits which lie ahead when our goals
are achieved. This should motivate us to higher
levels of performance.
These principles are not only limited
to the attainment of personal goals
but also corporate objectives. Our
ability to regain our leadership
position in the banking industry is
predicated not on the avoidance of
challenges but on our ability to "STAY
THE COURSE" and overcome all the
challenges we face as an institution.
This is enshrined in our core value of
RESILIENCE which we all, as Lions and
Lionesses, should embody.
As we enter into a New Year, it is a
good time to take stock of what we
achieved last year against what we
had set out to achieve. We should all
recommit to 'STAYING THE COURSE"
and fully exploit all opportunities pre-
sented to us so we can truly maximise
our individual and corporate perfor-
mance for the year.
I wish you all the best in your endeav-
ours as we seek to individually and
collectively "STAY THE COURSE" and
move the Bank to greater heights in
2014. Happy New Year.
