The Larabanga Mosque – Northern Region
The
Village
on Stilts of
Nzulezu
The famous Larabanga Mosque is believed to
be the oldest Islamic building in Ghana dating
back to about 1693. The Mosque is built of clay in
Sudanese style architecture and has supporting
wooden beams jutting out of the wall. It contained
an ancient copy of the Koran brought by the
Arabian cleric who accompanied the people on
their migration to Larabanga.
An amazing Village
where life goes on
in the centre of the
Tadane River, just 90
km west of Takoradi.
The houses are built
on stilts and the
traditional village
life adapts to the
watery conditions.
The village was
formed many years
ago to escape from
slave raiders.
