T
he work climate according to Doug Jensen etal of the Hay
Group, describes the work environment created by an indi-
vidual manager. It consists of specific individual management
styles and behaviours in a particular unit or department. The sum-
mary is that as a manager or supervisor the responsibility of the
nature of the work climate in your unit, department or business
office lies solely with you. Is it friendly or unfriendly, does it encour-
age or stifle initiative?
Hay Group identified six dimensions which characterize the cli-
mate that can be set by a manager as flexibility, responsibility,
standards, rewards, clarity and team commitment. Employees
that find themselves in a positive work climate are bound to do
better than those working in a negative work climate.
A culture of gratitude and appreciation within our workplace is a
sign of positive work climate. Doug Jensen etal noted in their book
“The Managers Guide to Reward” that managers who create a
positive work climate can leverage it to gain employees who think
twice about departing the organization.
