A balanced diet from our local African dishes should consist of a moderate amount of com- plex carbohydrates, such as ofada rice (African rice), sweet potato, beans, etc., lean meats such as fish and chicken, and an abundance of different coloured fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products, and a small amount of healthy fats such as those found in avocados, ube (African Pear), nuts and seeds, and monounsatu- rated oils.
You’re quite vocal about body composi- tion, what does this really mean and how does it affect us?
I am very vocal about body composition because no two individuals are created alike. This is the reason why a meal plan may work for one person and not the other. Body composition is a method of describing what the body is made of. This includes fat, protein, minerals and body water. It goes beyond the scale which tells you just a number. Body composition describes weight more accurately than Body Mass Index (BMI), which doesn’t take into account many factors such as age, sex, or build. Body composition can
