“For us, we continue to expect that others will join these conversation of an Africa that will be able to lead the world, assist to solve the scarcity issues, provide the workforce which we have with the much needed employment. These and others is what Africa Day represents to us,” Elumelu explained further.
No mind was left uninspired by the contributions of the great African heroes on the panel. The thought leaders called on Africans to be mindful of their rich history, which according to them creates the path towards the socio-cultural, economic and political development of the continent.
Furthermore, the bank, through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm - UBA Foundation - has also been touching lives across the continent by continuously promoting education, improving the environment and living conditions, and also empowering people within and outside its communities of operations.
In the month of June, the Foundation commemorated the International Day of the African child with a special edition
of its Read Africa project, an initiative geared towards rekindling the dwindling reading and literacy culture amongst African youths. Young students from various African schools were mentored and advised on the benefits of taking their education seriously, especially in the area of reading.
The International Day of the African
Child has been observed on June 16th every year since the establishment of Organization of the African Unity in 1991. It is a day that has been set aside by the United Nations to celebrate children in Africa as well as recognise the courage of students who marched for their right to better education in Soweto South Africa.
“The future of Africa lies in her youth,” said UBA’s Group Head, Human Resources,
Mrs Patricia Aderibigbe who welcomed the students to UBA House in Lagos during the special Read Africa session, while explaining why the Foundation was doing a lot to facilitate educational projects and bridge the literacy-wide gap on a pan- African scale.
