Editor’s
note
70 years is the beautiful platinum milestone age that is acknowledged even by God. To cross this age is indeed a blessing and a priviledge, and this year, UBA has a lot to celebrate.
The history and legacy of UBA is so rich,
so intriguing and as well, inspirational. This commemorative edition of the Lion King Magazine takes you back 70 years. To the time when UBA was born, an era of high fashion (Fashion Through the Ages, page 92), the era of colonialism and one where few people could ever have predicted that Africa would be this independently developed just a few decades later.
Fast forward to today, you can read about UBA’s expansion into Africa and the many subsidiaries of the group who are celebrating their 10th anniversary (10 Years and Counting, page 35)
So many beautiful memories, so many interesting milestones, (Platinum, page 08) the UBA we know today is an amalgamation of the United Bank for Africa and Standard Trust Bank which was founded by the young banking whiz kid, Tony Elumelu.
Mr Elumelu’s career and achievements in banking are well known. His philanthropy in Africa as he spreads $100 million of his wealth to Young African entrepreneurs, is even better known. But not many know who Tony Elumelu really is. Read about his personal journey (My name is Tony, page 16).
I came to UBA about 4 years ago with somewhat different expectations than what I met. I have on occasion, stated that I was pleasantly surprised to find
so many super intelligent people with fascinating backgrounds, working in the group. I had worried a little about going to

work in a male dominated environment, wondering if my voice would be lost. The reality thankfully, was so much different than my thoughts. I am not 70 years old yet, but I have been around for a while and at UBA I have encountered some of the most dynamic and beautiful women
I have come across in my career. We needed to celebrate some of these women in the Lion King Magazine (Wise women too, page 62). The history of UBA cannot be complete without the Lionesses after all.
It’s our first edition of the year, but a most special one that I hope will delight you.
Happy anniversary to all of us at UBA and many thanks to our clients and associates who have been with the bank through the years.
