Fulfilled its Promise to
AbdulAzeez
By Ramon Olanrewaju Nasir
“
Before I announce the
winners of this competition, I
have a piece of information
for you and the audience present
at this occasion,” Professor Ralph
Akinfeleye of University of Lagos,
and one of the three Professors
that judged the entries submitted
during the 2012 UBA Foundation
National Essay Competition for
Secondary Students in Nigeria
said, increasing the anxiety
among the finalists, parents and
invited guests during the grand
finale held at UBA House in
Lagos.
“This year is unusual and we
the judges are delighted to
announce that one of the
entries in this year’s competition
was submitted by a visually
impaired student of a secondary
school in Lagos,” the Professor
said to the very curious crowd.
He continued, “This lad had
submitted an essay handwritten
on a Braille paper, with a
teacher’s note saying the writer
is visually impaired. Though,
he is not one of the finalists, we
considered his entry worthy of
commendation, and enjoin the
Foundation to honour him as an
encouragement to people with
disability”.
Without further ado, the
Managing Director of the
Foundation, Ijeoma Aso,
announced to the delight of the
crowd that the Foundation will
tow the path advised by Professor
Akinfeleye and honour the
enterprising student.
