Poetry
BY THE BEND
Ayinla Muyideen Adeleke
That’s where I have been
Among men whose works remain to be seen.
This is where I reside
Amidst this stream of men-
Whose trades flourish in inks of pen.
You have searched the dancing floor
Among those bevy of girls-
And men captured by dancing spells,
Alas! I will be home reading Bernard Shaw.
My heart breathes writing poetry
As a breeder tends his poultry,
Seeking the wonders yet to appease the human mind,
Writing words too touching for men to rescind.
When next you need to seek me
And your heart beats for a sip of poetry or prose,
I will be blooming fresh like the red rose-
In my house just a couple of houses by the bend.
THINGS I FEAR
Ayomipo Ajayi
I fear to bear the risk, the pain and the tears
I feel torn apart by everything I bear
I hardly want to take a step like where.
But I discovered it’s more risk to stay away from risks
It’s more risk to stay at the rear
It’s much more risk to refuse going ahead
Tossed by the wave and currents,
Flowing with the realm of time isn’t cool
It might only make me feel odd for a longer time.
After a long and deep period of thought, I concluded that
Either even or odd, I’m responsible first;
For what happens to me, where I am, and where I’m going...
Either forward or backward, staying in a spot is more risk.
It doesn’t matter the things I fear.
LIFE’S OPPORTUNITIES
Oluwafemi Olabanji
Opportunity always on parade
It takes keen foresight to be on guard
Many have been lost and so sore living with the pain
Hindsight of the lost helps catch up the next gain
Everyday we passed by opportunity unnoticed
‘Cause we walk blindfolded with thought perplexed
Within our perplexity is need for discovery
Never an end to life of opportunity
Swiftest are not always the winner in life race
Nor the strongest in the battle that we face
Riches and favour not for the wisest and skillful
But life chances ceased triggers time bountiful
CUCKOLDED YOU HAVE BEEN
Prince Ayewoh
With bated breath, you beheld this beauty
A typification of the best of Mother- Africa
A veritable Gazelle, with flirty and exquisite attributes
Awaiting the all - conquering Matador
With cunning and superior intellect
Her wiles, her cunning, you mastered
You soar in ecstatic jubilation
For this Eagle has come home to roost
Affinities of cultures
Traditions celebrated
Two souls on a pathway, intertwined
Willing and emboldened by the power of belief and
passion
A blended fusion of hopes characterized by struggles
Defiantly, you spur, you succumb, yet, you spur again
Your heart is making the beast with two backs
You have been cuckolded, Damn that Day!!
INDELIBLE MOTHER
Idi Mahmuda Jimeta
I’d rather not laugh but weep
She left without saying good bye
She smiled at me each time I muse
And then I wonder!
Who taught the trees to take a rest
And the birds to build a nest
I wonder why she isn’t around to clean up my tears
All alone I wonder!!
With each drop of tears
With a youthful perception
Why she left me at a tender age
At such a crucial life juncture
But like a river flowing into the Sahara
Taming the sand of its fever
Billed to the fury of the blistering sun
My tears dried up and the fact remains that
I will meet her in the eternal years after
In the stronghold of the Almighty
To part no more again
