minerals which if properly harnessed will bring forth
the emergence of a strong economy creating
wealth for Guinea and the sub-region”.
While giving background information on UBA Guin-
ea’s performance, Drogba gave a brief overview of
the banking landscape in Guinea; which revealed
Guinea has 14 banks which will increase in the first
quarter of 2013. UBA Guinea began operations in
February 2010 and as at the end of 2010, the bank
was already in the 8th place in terms of customer
deposits.
In December 2012, UBA Guinea moved up to be the
fourth local bank in terms of market share. In terms
of profitability, UBA Guinea with a rate of 57% ranks
second in the sector with revenues of USD 58,000
per staff to an industry average which established
USD 23,000. In addition, the bank is part of the Top 3
in terms of Return of Equity. “By December 2012, our
capital will be more than double our initial capital”.
UBA Guinea attained the audit ROLE MODEL rating
in 2012. This rating indicates that all UBA Guinea
investors and social partners’ income earned are
neither fictitious nor ephemeral. This year’s rating
has given the bank the opportunity to celebrate
the excellent work done by its team of back office
and support departments. This is an opportunity to
publicly recognize the vital work that takes place
in the back office and without which the bank’s
objective would not be achieved.
Rating UBA Guinea’s overall performance in com-
parison to other UBA African Subsidiaries, Drogba
recalled that before he took over the responsibility,
he stated that UBA Guinea would break even within
6 months of operation; this he was able to achieve
with the dedicated staff of UBA Guinea. “It was a
commitment I made toward my bosses at the time
and I am proud to have achieved. I would say that
our overall performance is good and there is a
healthy competition amongst our subsidiaries” he
said.
Armand Drogba sees UBA Guinea as the number
one leader in the Guinean banking sector in the
next five years. With the quality of UBA Group, he
is certain UBA Guinea can successfully do better.
“If we all believe and with the implementation of
Project Alpha, we have an excellent platform to
achieve this. The time of the national economy
is gone, leaving in place the African and global
thinking. I see UBA Group at the top of African
Banking and one of the top banks in global reckon-
ing. Ours is truly Africa’s Global bank” he emphati-
cally stated.
