Mount Nimba
Located on the borders of Guinea, Mount Nimba,
rich in iron ore, is the culmination of West Africa
(1752 m). In its extension to the south-west is Mount
Richard-Molard (approx. 1280 m), which is the bor-
der triangle between the two countries and Liberia.
Above the surrounding savannah, Mount Nimba
is an area of great ecological wealth. Its sides are
covered with dense forests and peaks of grassy
mountain pastures that attracted the attention
of naturalists who have spent the colonial period
when major studies of the flora and fauna. Nature
Reserve Mount Nimba Strict, is listed since 1981
Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by
UNESCO.
The prospect of the resumption of operations of
iron ore in the Liberian area, motivated its ranking
on the list of World Heritage in Danger, four min-
ing companies have expressed a desire to reopen
some mines abandoned during the civil war and
the Government of Liberia challenging the existing
boundaries of the Reserve.
