O
ver the past few years, something amaz-
ing happened to Ankara. Our much
adored African print suddenly became
cool… and not just in Africa. Adorned by celebs
from Beyonce to Fergie and seen on catwalks
from Milan to New York. Our African fabric went
abroad and made it big!
2010 in particular was ‘the year of Ankara’ From
Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B to Versace, designers
worldwide embraced the funky prints and pat-
terns of Ankara and have created vibrant cloth-
ing and accessories.
Ankara has stretched our creative minds and
evolved from being that old piece of material
our grandparents wore, to becoming the ‘go
to’ fabric for almost anything. By simply infusing
Ankara with other fabrics and textures it has be-
come a fashion staple in everyone’s wardrobe.
Wear it with jeans, wear it to the office or use
it to upholster your sofa, Ankara is now used to
make everything from handbags to footwear
and we just can’t seem to get enough of it.
Ankara has captured our hearts, and as Afri-
cans we are proud to see that our native prints
are finally being appreciated for their beauty,
bold and daring quality.
Vlisco’s latest collection, Palais des Sentiments,
tells the Ankara tale in a rich, opulent mix of tex-
tures, jewel-toned prints and fluid silhouettes.
